The Beginning: A Passion for Patient Care

My journey into the world of becoming a podiatrist began back in 2016. For five years, I worked as a healthcare assistant in a care home dedicated to residents living with dementia. I cherished the opportunity to work closely with people, but over time, I felt increasingly overworked and underappreciated, with no clear path for career progression. Frustration mounted until I experienced a pivotal moment that changed everything.

The Lightbulb Moment

One day, a podiatrist whom I had seen many times before visited the care home. For the first time, I truly observed her work. She attended to each resident with skill and confidence, taking the time to engage in meaningful conversations that the residents so dearly needed. Watching her, I realised that I wanted a change. I aspired to have a career where I could make a tangible difference while feeling valued and fulfilled.

Taking the First Step

Determined to explore this new path, my first move entailed beginning to research careers as a foot health practitioner. With only GCSEs to my name, I decided that enrolling in a foot health practitioner course was the most logical first step. On her next visit, I confided in Kay, the podiatrist, about my ambitions. She encouraged me wholeheartedly to pursue my goals, and over the next 18 months, I kept her updated on my progress as I completed each module.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

On Kay’s next visit to the home, I spoke to her and expressed my want to sign up for a foot health practitioner course. Kay encouraged me to “go for it,” and over the next 18 months, I kept her updated on my progress as I passed each module. One day, Kay told me, “You need to meet my husband, Jim.” She recognised my dedication to the profession but knew I needed someone to believe in me and provide an opportunity. This marked a turning point in my life. Jim hired me as a foot health practitioner right out of college, despite my lack of experience. Initially, I worked in reception, which helped me understand the various reasons patients sought our services. This role soon evolved into providing foot care to care home residents, closely supervised by a team of podiatrists.

Overcoming Self-Limiting Beliefs

Jim had always been positive about my progress, but I often expressed self-doubt with comments like, “I could never treat patients in a clinic like you, Jim.” As time went on, I found myself doing exactly that—and loving it! My confidence grew steadily, and I realised that every time I voiced my doubts, Jim seemed determined to prove me wrong. Fast forward to 2024, and I can hardly recognise the person I once was. I’ve transformed from someone with no experience and little self-belief into a professional confidently managing a full caseload of patients, having just submitted my dissertation for a three-year Podiatry Degree Apprenticeship.

Looking Forward

I believe many people possess transferable skills and a passion for patient care and would thrive in our profession with the right encouragement and mentorship. As I continue to enhance my skills, I look forward to the development of a tiered professional framework in Podiatry. One day I hope to offer the same opportunities and support to others that I was fortunate enough to receive.

My journey has shown me that with determination, the right guidance, and a bit of courage, anyone can achieve their dreams. I look forward to continuing to grow and inspire others in the ever-evolving field of Podiatry.
